BTW, I'm on the fence as to whether I'm even bringing myself to this event. I'm just so into sitting on my lard @... Richard, get off that "lard @..." and come join us!!! Seriously, I really hope you do... and see if you can convince Shin to come as well. I really enjoy you two! (but you already know that)
BTW II: I think Aki is asking that someone in Authority put up some FIRM dates and times!
Yes... please?Rosie

Wild horses can't be tamed. But yes, Richard, would be nice to see you. Word is there might be a Tulanaiyo jaunt in there.
Actually, might be nice to see the moon at its biggest, rising over the Inyos (do I have geography right?). Wonder when the moon rises.

Looks like the moon rises around 6:48 pm, though may take some time to clear the mountains. http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/as...l=-11&day=1Could do early potluck at the hostel, followed by hike. Could bring thermoses, maybe some dessert. Or maybe a moonlight happy hour in the Alabamas, followed by a late potluck at the hostel.....

Hi OK lets say lite potluck around 6 PM leave for the hike around 8 and should be back by 12 AM-1AM. We can place several cars around the midpoint "ARCH Trail" parking lot with snacks and jackets. The second portion of the trail is the chance for a side hike to a high point.Depending on lighting and time this maybe a chance to catch the moon over Whitney or a falling cluster over steep loose scree in the dark!!!
Open for any other options ??Thanks Doug

Hi Doug! I'm not sure where "Arch Trail" is, but I'm REALLY hoping it's the arch in the Alabama Hills that I've seen so many pictures of - framing Mt. Whitney? I've never been there... every time I've made it down to Lone Pine I'd promised myself I'd try to find it, but it's just never happened.
Regardless, the proposed schedule sounds great!

Thumbs up.
Maybe dessert on the trail? And a nip of something warm and/or spiked?

Yup, I discovered that hot apple cider with Crown Royal is VERRRRYYY good!!! It certainly was a hit at Thousand Island Lake last summer, late at night watching the stars!!

My brother Ken and I will probably be heading south Sunday morning... I fly back to Washington the following day, and I"ll want to spend a little more time with my Mom.
When are you getting in to Lone Pine, Karin.. Friday evening or Saturday morning?

Not sure yet. Easiest is to break the driving up and roll into town late Saturday morning/early Saturday afternoon. I think doing two hikes on Saturday would be a lot. But I have never been to Manzanar ... if the govt shutdown is over by then, might be nice to fit in a tour on Saturday. www.nps.gov/manz/‎ Of course, that site does not work right now due to the shutdown. So, info may be found on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manzanar . I believe operating hours are 9:30 a.m. -4:30 p.m. So, I'll throw that out there as an option if anyone else is interested.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOThis is going to be so much fun!!!! Friends, food, warm beverages and trail fun!!!!!!!! Costumes? No costumes? Due to the temps, I will assume naked hiking is off the table.

Due to the temps, I will assume naked hiking is off the table. Damn-it... and I thought I had my "costume" figured out!! Actually, I was wondering the same thing - costume/no costume? I'm game... just gotta come up with something warmer than nothing! LOL! Karin, if you've never been to Manzanar, it's totally worth it; lets all go together. Ken actually did quite a bit of research on Manzanar, and has a lot of interesting info on it. Rosie

What time do you think it makes sense to do Manzanar? How much time does it take, reasonably?
Costumes optional, yes? I am not in a costume frame of mind. More in a warm drink/booze frame of mind. Though I am bringing my pup, and she could probably bear some indignity without too much suffering.

Manzanar is one of those places everyone (Americans in particular) should visit. Terrifying, beautiful, surprising and humbling. Yes, I would definitely make time for it.
