Howdy - new guy here. Checked this message board over the years but never signed up before. I've tried Whitney a couple times in the winter (mountaineers route) and actually built an igloo once too (not near Whitney though). Would like to meet up with the group in February.. I don't know enough winter climbers! Can bring some extra gear (snowshoes, ice axe etc) if that would help...

You can add BMan (Brandon) to the list.

One of those days is going to include a summit bid though...

Karin, an ultralight snow shovel is the very least thing I asked Santa for, and I didn't get it. frown However, I did get this really cool pair of neon boots. I'm sure they will serve me well in the snow. smile

Yay! Robin, I'm so glad you're going to be joining us.... I haven't seen you in SO long!

Hey Doug, I think my brother Ken is going to join us as well. Don't worry, Richard, we'll keep the "family bickering" (a.k.a. teasing) to a minimum laugh ... it's kinda tough when you're as close in age as we are.

This is going to be SO fun.... can't wait to see everyone!!

Rosie

Just brainstorming about the Igloo building.
Are there more than one Block forms as of this time?
Should more forms be purchased? What type, brand etc.
Are we planning an early start on Sat the 15th to get in some bldg. and possibly sleep in tents that evening with more bldg on Sun Coming out on Mon? Are we doing this near the Portal Store? Wine or Whiskey ? Down, wool or Synthetic? Is there any snow?

This could be fun

Hi We went up on Saturday snow around the Portal and cold say 30 degrees , so snow is from about 2 months ago now and not much water in it . Yes the flat area above the store where we park our trailer in the summer, and the Patio area is clear or easy to clear with 4 tables, I can open the store since it is empty and worst case get out of the weather if needed.

I don't have the details on the mould ,recall when they came out but thats about it, I will research if other options are out there, I will be at the retailer show in 2 weeks so will see what they have.

We have winter ground pads that work very well with a regular pad on top , they may look like the Oklahoma G tex but keep you off the snow and warm.

I like the ideal of Saturday morning no hurry say some could leave early and others drift in all day???? recall it is dark by 3 PM ! Full Moon say up about 9PM??? If a repeat of the last moon hike everyone should be "oiled" by then and we don't need to do a hike.

Full moon rise around 6:37 p.m. on Saturday, see http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/as...l=-11&day=1

I'm hoping there is enough snow to build igloos using that tool(s), and also to build a quinzee just using shovels. Knowing how to build a quinzee is a nice survival tool for backcountry folk. I'd like to test it out. Here's a youtube video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MniKeLZGsCY

It's all about the snow, hey? Yeah, thinking to arrive Friday night, build stuff Saturday, maybe day hike Sunday, location TBD based on conditions? Depending on weather, would be nice to camp at the Portal.

I'm placing my order for a Burger Plate SIX WEEKS in advance.

I usually sleep when the moon is out these days... it's usually much warmer during the day... what else?

Truck the snow in like they do for some of those Olympic Events...

BTW: Dallas is calling for HEAVY SNOW in Northern California for the end of this month. Is Whitney considered Northern?

Hi Rosie,
I'll add Ken to the list.

On a side note:
I like Doug's idea of everyone coming in whenever. That way late arrivals can sleep in. We can start when we want but I think the early people should take the igloo building tools so they could start.

I'm bringing a back country sled I built to try out. I might need a wagon if there's no snow.

I'm looking forward to this, it will be good to see everyone!
Take care.
