When I summited this summer, there were 4 dogs at the summit (45 minute period). And they wanted to play! (Unlike their tired owners). Note besides the usual hiking with your dog guidelines, with the Whitney Summit, you should probably follow a very conservative altitude acclimatization schedule (3 days?) to make sure your furbaby has fun. Also, depending on your dog, you may need to double your carried water, for Whitney this means 3L --> 6L for the summit push. Another good idea is to do a dry run at the White Mountain Peak.

FYI - Dogs are not allowed from Trail Crest on - that is the boundary into Sequoia Nat'l Park, and dogs are prohibited on trail in nat'l parks.

Also note that if your dog gets sick on Mount Whitney there is no "Canine Rescue Squad" that will spring into action (no helicopter rescues for dogs) unlike apparently in Colorado:

(shows a cute picture of a 120 pound Great Pyrenees being rolled down a mountain trail on a ruggedized uni-wheel stretcher like a King!) (Google search words: Evergreen, rescue, Kato, Maxwell Falls, Great Pyrenees)

I take exception to your characterization of my JMT trip. You're implying that I'm a "cat person" and that I would subject myself to ridicule for traveling the entire length of the JMT in that way. Yes, I did pass a man who had six wives, and each wife had six sacks, and in each sack were six cats. However, they were going in the opposite direction. For you to confuse me with one of that party is offensive and frankly rude---especially since it's very well-known that I only had 5 cats and a wall-eyed ferret.

Jeff M, I am outraged by your callous mockery of polygamists. So what if they have many wives and enjoy having a lot of sacks? They're not harming anyone. Meanwhile, your strabismic ferret is probably spreading plague everywhere it slinks.

Campylobacter and ringworm fungus aren't the same as plague, you ambling Australopithecus!

Both I and Mr. Winklepuss are thoroughly offended.

Here is a stock picture of a dog on top of the White Mountain Peak (14,242 feet) who is obviously NOT doing a dry run for Mount Whitney as that would be a dry run for a criminal act.

More official Google link:

PS: I cannot find a picture of a dog on the Mount Whitney Summit on the Web. Obviously, the National Park Service's "Skynet" AI scans for them and removes them before they can be seen.

Having trouble "headlocking" (free) Google Drive into getting a displayable link with a proper ".jpg" extension needed by
the forum. Trying again.

It seems just adding the junk suffix: "&.jpg" (at sign) to the previous URL worked. But Google changes/discontinues stuff at an extreme pace so who knows how long it will work.

That was an "Ampersand", not an "at sign" (couldn't edit original post). The Ampersand displays weird in the forum.
